2nd-Jan-2010 03:03 pm - SORT ME?
  • What sort of profession in the wizarding world would you choose and why?
I would choose to be an Auror; through my parents and school, I’ve learned the importance of justice, whether it is social or legal. To spend my life hunting down Dark wizards and ridding the world of evil is something my liberal heart loves far too much: merely the idea of providing for a better future and protecting a society ignites the inner hero in me. Furthermore, to be an Auror is not simply a matter of determination and desire: one must be also be correctly trained and have mastered the tenets of magic, which makes Aurors one of the most elite groups of wizards in the Wizarding world. They are strong, courageous, talented, and beacons of hope in a world where little is fair and much is unjust. One of my strongest hopes is to serve as a role model for others, and what better way to do than to be an Auror?
  • You have to venture deep into the Forbidden Forest one night. Pick one Harry Potter character other than Hagrid and one object (muggle or magical), besides your wand, that you'd want with you.
I would choose Sirius Black and I would take along the special mirror he gives to Harry in “Order of the
Phoenix”. Sirius Black is an incredible wizard, a versatile and protean Animagus, as well as a great friend/father to Harry. Most of all, I think I would feel protected by him if I had to venture into the Forbidden Forest in the dead of night. The reason I would bring the mirror is if Sirius and I were separated, I could always call his name into the mirror and find him again. A failsafe way to keep together.
  • If you had the opportunity to live forever, but your family and friends did not, what would you choose? And if you did choose to live forever, what would you do with eternity?
I would not choose to live forever. It would be the most depressing thing possible, to watch as generations and generations of my children, friends, and other loved ones passed away while I kept living on. The idea of being able to see the world and every generation as it passed is an exciting idea and while I am intrigued by it, I think the idea of saying goodbye to hundreds of people over and over again would tear me apart emotionally and at some point, physically.
  • If you could travel back in time to one point, when and where would you go? Why?
I would love to travel back to Edith Wharton’s time, the 1910s in
New York. It would be an amazing experience to see society at that period in time, when social norms were rigid and uniform, but there were people defying these norms one by one. Simply the experience of being able to speak with Edith Wharton would be amazing; her view on society and conformity were refreshing and sarcastic enough to keep me engaged. Most of all, I feel that if I traveled back to the 1910s, I could help break some norms that were championed then but are seen as old-fashioned now, and start a nonconformity and radicalism movement sooner.
  • What HP character do you identify with most and why?
I identify most with Ginny Weasley. At one point, I used to claim that I was just like Hermione Granger, this incredibly book-smart girl who was adept at magic and picked up concepts and knowledge very quickly. But seeing as how I am not half as intelligent as Hermione Granger could ever be, I think I am most like Ginny Weasley. I am loud, outgoing, and some see me as “one of the boys”. I love sports, especially cheering along loudly with a bunch of rowdy guys, but I can also hang with the girls. Mostly, I know what it’s like to pine after a guy so much that I was completely incapable of speaking in front of him (see: Ginny and Harry in “The Chamber of Secrets”).
  • What would you see if you looked into the Mirror of Erised?
A socially just world, I believe. That sounds totally and completely idealistic and hopeful, but I believe that if I looked into the Mirror of Erised, I would see equality and justice for all, in which there would be no infighting and a relative peace would blanket the world. Of course, I do not delude myself into thinking this peace would be forever, but it would exist for a substantially long amount of time.
  • Do you believe that moral actions should be judged by the intentions behind them, or by the consequences they create?
I believe moral actions should be judged by the intentions behind them: I abide by the proverb, “it’s the thought that counts”. There are those who act with malicious interests, yet produce benign consequences; are we simply to applaud them for having achieved the positive though they set out to do the opposite? And simultaneously, there are those who act with good interests but accidentally cause something awful to happen. Are we then to persecute them for what they create rather than giving them credit for having had the right intentions? I think the latter.
  • What was your ideal job as a kid? Has that changed? What is your ideal job now?
My ideal job as a kid was to be a doctor. (I was not very creative). I was preoccupied with “saving people” and wanting to better the world one medicine tablet at a time. Of course, I grew up and now my ideal job is to work in a consulate or embassy: I would love to work in international relations as well as study diplomacy firsthand. The idea of me being able to have a hand in a country’s foreign affairs and being able to observe the international system up close is incredibly exciting.
  • If you were able to invent one spell, potion, or charm, what would it do, what would you use it for or how would you use it, and what would you call it?
I would create a spell to undo your last action, kind of like the Undo button on a computer. I would use it for physical actions, as if you accidentally spilled a glass of water on your notes, you could undo it. (Yes, you can use Tergeo to siphon the water out, but there are other scenarios in which this would not work). I would use the Latin word Induco, which means to revoke or annul something.
  • If you were to face a boggart, what would it turn into? And what does it turn into when you throw the counter-spell, Riddikulus?

I believe the boggart would turn into what it turned into for Molly Weasley in “Order of the Phoenix”: my dead family members. The idea of losing a loved one is terrifying and I do believe my worst nightmare. I cannot possibly imagine losing my loved ones especially gruesomely, so this would most likely be my boggart. If I cast Riddikulus, I think my family members would start doing karaoke. That would bring the lols, I have to admit.

  • What do you look for in a friend?
Honesty and loyalty. Those are truthfully the only things I actively search for. I believe that honesty is the foundation of any relationship; I would need someone who could tell me the truth at all times especially if I ask for it. I wouldn’t want them to lie to me to “protect my feelings”: I would rather take the bluntness and truthfulness. I also believe loyalty is important: there are too many instances when friends betray you because they don’t believe there is a need to be loyal to you. If there is no loyalty in a friendship, then I don’t consider that friendship to really exist.
  • What trait most annoys you about other people?
Denial/non-acceptance. I hate it when people refuse to accept something that is a given or at least acknowledge the idea that there is something out there that might differ from what they believe or what they understand to be true. Without getting into specifics, I hate it when people do not understand that there is such a thing as having a different opinion, and that there is no need to jump down others’ throats who do not share that same opinion.
  • What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities?
Honesty, loyalty, open-mindedness, acceptance, and independence.
  • What do you think are your top five weaknesses or worst qualities?
Sensitivity, stubbornness, being way too loud, obnoxious/lofty, talking too much.
  • Define in your own words the following key traits:
    • Courage: The ability to act according to your instincts regardless of what others say; strength and bravery to do what others will not
    • Loyalty: To support and continue to be friends with people regardless of hard times
    • Intelligence: To be sharp-witted, understanding, knowledgeable, open-minded
    • Ambition: The desire to fight for something that you might not necessarily obtain, the impetus to chase something that you want

  • Name: Kris
  • Age: 17
  • Where did you find out about us? I read people mentioning it in other communities.
  • Do you plan on being active in the communities once you are sorted? Absolutely.

5th-Jan-2010 10:24 pm - Term XVI Layout Contest
Attention to all of you that are graphically gifted and know your way around LJ's coding and CSS quirks! It's time for this term's main community layout contest! You know you want to enter, right? I mean, who doesn't want everyone that comes to HiH to see their lovely work?

Here are the requirements:
1. The layout must be in Gryffindor colors to celebrate their winning of the House Cup. However, it must not be all about the Lions, even if they are made of awesomesauce! It needs to celebrate HiH as a whole, and as long as the primary colors in the design are red and gold, you can do that however you like.

2. The layout must be easy to read for just about everyone. Basically, this means no forcing the text size, and allowing a decent amount of contrast between text and background colors. (please with the contrast! Its hard to read light fonts on light backgrounds.)

3. It needs to have a matching icon to use as the HiH Default.

4. You may include any other graphics you wish, but all are optional. Ideas: alternates for the "lj user=" man; designs for blockquotes; a header; background images/patterns; bullet thingies for links; &c!

5. The layout must be based on an S2 layout. It needs to support links on the sidebar for the Houses, Tags, and Page Summary at the very least.

6. The layout must be workable for a free account. (We're not going to Plus, no ads please.)

7. You may need to be able to set it up for us, because I know I don't have the time to tweek things to make them 'just so'. You also need to be open to changes. If we vote for your layout, but the text needs to be darker, or the background darker or whatever.

8. Also I would like for you to submit a test journal. Not sure what this means - check out last terms voting post . This must be a completely anonymous journal that cannot link back to any person or house - that means the name too - make it generic please.

Any questions? Ask them here and we'll make sure to answer them as quickly as possible. Entries must be in by Tuesday, Jan 12th. I think one weeks is enough to make a journal and I'm sure the Lions are anxious to change HiH to gold and red, again.

Points and Knuts: Layouts are a big deal! For participating, you earn 25 points and 10 knuts.

First place will receive: 75 points and 40 knuts
Second place: 60 points and 30 knuts
Third place: 50 points and 20 knuts

This is the drop post for the entries. And reminder for the test journal you can't have it friended or have anyone else as friends or anything that links back.

Let me know if you have any questions!
I knew I was going to like (500) Days of Summer, but I never expected to love it. It's not a romantic comedy and anyone who lumps it under that title is doing the film a disservice. It's a story about love and heartbreak, and the different ways in which they can affect us. It has moments of romance and moments of comedy, but paralleled with these moments are ones of despair and moroseness. One minute it's up, the next minute it's down. The credit for this and its success most definitely has to go to the writers and two stars, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel.

5th-Jan-2010 08:46 pm - Happy New Year, kind-of-requests
Happy belated New Year ♥

We all love picspams, and since I actually do a lot of them at my personal, I thought I'd link to those that may interest some of you. So, here's the first one:

I didn't have as much inspiration and time as I thought, so while I do have icons, they're all over my fandoms, but so far not enough for a proper post.

And since I'm lacking real inspiration, I'm offering that you can leave images you'd like icons or a wallpaper from, or request tutorials or psds.
I'm not promising to use all images, but I'm in an very experimenting phase and I'll do my best. All subjects except mange/anime and sports (because I suck at them) are ok.
[info]shirasade! Have a great day, honey! *hugs*

Customers and I are so done professionally. :P Not sure what's going on, if I once again missed the memo about the world going under, but the last two days have been crazy. *hugs pillow*
But Pityu made it all better - apparently the backstairs don't have to be freed of the snow, so you can barely make them out under all the white stuff. He was so excited to get out that he skidded down on his butt. Don't worry, he didn't hurt himself, otherwise I wouldn't have been laughing. ;D

Random pics, just because. ;) Gerard Butler, Viggo Mortensen, Clive Owen, Sam Worthington, Mads Mikkelsen, Anthony Stewart Head, Ioan Gruffudd, Gillian Anderson and Rachel Weisz.
